Tidbits: Expert Secrets Book Review

Expert Secrets

by Russell Brunson

The subtitle for this book is "the underground playbook for creating a mass movement of people who will pay for your advice..."

The author caught my attention when he said,
"As you know, the world is filled with experts who are broke, people with advice and opinions and no one is listening to them."

That observation was presented in the first paragraph of the first page of the text, after the usual front matter such as acknowledgments and the introduction. Actually, it's the second sentence!

Book Review: Show Your Work

Book Review:

Show Your Work

By Austin Kleon

I do not know who to credit this recommendation, but Thank You

When I stumble across something on the Internet that looks interesting, I log onto my local library's website. If it's available, then I request a copy and continue with whatever reading I was doing. Anywhere from a week to a month later my local library sends me a notification that my book is ready to be picked up. Since I'll have several books in the queue, I usually don't remember why a particular book intrigued me.

This is one of those books!

What is SEO on Google?

Google is
The Book of the Internet

All search engines work alike, but I'm focusing on Google so we don't get into the weeds about the differences between Bing, Yahoo, GoDuckGo or any other search page.

Google visits every site it can find - billions! - and adds every word on every page to a master index. Then it also evaluates the content and context of each page.

What Google considers is actually a trade secret because it wants to return the best, most current information to its visitors.

Google invites you to enter a word, a phrase, or a question in whatever format you choose!

Zoom Meeting Security

Zoom Security Concerns

We are hearing A LOT about security flaws in Zoom. Most headlines are over-hyped to encourage readership. This article explores the major threats and how to easily fix them.

Zoom security is a popular topic because Zoom has become the go-to software-as-a-service application for meetings online.

This article is mostly for people who are hosting/organizing virtual meetings, but it has value for people invited to attend them.

Copywriter vs Content Writer vs Technical Writer vs Technician

What is a Copywriter?

Copywriter
Content Writer
Technical Writer

Those three titles sound similar, but they have very different views of the same content.

Take, for example, the ever-present coffee pot.

How to use ZOOM.us ~ How to Join a Zoom meeting

The Corona Virus has pushed everyone into "Social Distancing." All the restaurants in my area offer only take-out and delivery - there is no dine-in dining. Theaters and bars and gyms and beaches are all closed!

Fortunately, the Internet provides us an opportunity to connect face-to-face using video software!

How To Use Zoom:
Join a Zoom Meeting

First, you do not need a Zoom account to join a meeting that someone else has set up. At the bottom of this article you can see how to join a meeting that I have set up.

"Follow By Email"

On the sidebar to the right is an innocuous box that invites you to submit your email address.

When you do that, you will receive notifications delivered to that address when a new article has been posted to this blog!

Should A Non-Profit Organization Have A Business Plan?

Yes: A non-profit organization should have a business plan.

And, hand-in-hand with that statement, a non-profit organization should have a marketing plan to go with their business plan.

My role as a SCORE mentor is to provide help entrepreneurs become successful. And yes, non-profits can benefit from my support.

What Do You Think About An Advisory Board...?

I found this PDF file dated October, 2015. I'm not sure when it was actually written. I'm not sure why/how it ended up on my computer, but this was about the time I was moving my computer skills from my full-time job to create a viable business (A Better Computer, Inc.)

If you're in transition, then you may find this valuable advice, and a worthy suggestion to follow!

Tidbits: Positive SSL for $8.50

I've used the CleanTalk.org plugin for several of my sites to protect against SPAM user accounts. I like their product!

They are now selling single-site SSL certificates for $8.50.

The equivalent single-domain certificate costs $75/year at GoDaddy (on sale in June for $60) and $24/year at ABCInc-Domains.

Here is my (successful) journey to purchase and install their certificates....

I often stumble across an interesting link that I want to remember - and possibly share. The sites are not worthy of a full blog on their own, but....

Job Titles for Web Workers?!

At a recent WordPress Meetup, admittedly in a moment of distraction, I reflected on the job title of the presenter.

My question:
What single word described my skill sets?

I was off to Google for my research...

My 2017 Journey into Social Media

"Social Media" is all the rage, along with SEO.

I'm saving SEO for another blog, but I want to document me getting involved into the depths of Social Media.

WordPress Assembler: A New Title

Kudos to Tony Zeoli for his article "The New WordPress NINJA: WordPress Assembler." This gave me an whole new perspective on providing support for WordPress web pages.

The running joke about asking an engineer the time of day is that after answering the question he then wants to explain how a clock works. I'm guilty of that. When I'm asked to create a web site, I tend to go into excruciating detail.

The phrase "WordPress Assembler" is a really simple title: it defines a complete skill set!

SCORE Webinar: "5 Pillars for a Facebook Business Page that Rocks!"

Everyone in business is interested in marketing through Social Media, and as a SCORE mentor I want to learn as much as I can.

This is a review for a SCORE webinar I "attended" in April.

There are several take-aways that I would like to share with you.:

LinkedIn: "How To Start Consulting On The Side"

This was an interesting article I found on LinkedIn, and I wanted to bring it to your attention. Liz Ryan gives nuggets of encouragement throughout the article.

It's a good read, but not the blueprint we could expect from the title.

Blogging, Today

This afternoon, Freelancer.com wrote "Let me blow your mind with a statistic: there are over 152 million blogs floating around out there in cyberspace."
  • 43% of those blogs are on Wordpress.
  • 35% are on Blogger.
  • 16% are on Tumblr.
  • Adds up to 94% ~~ (The remaining 6% are sprinkled across random smaller platforms.)
